October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a great reminder that protecting your personal and financial information doesn't have to be complicated. As technology continues to evolve, so do the tactics used by fraudsters and cybercriminals. The good news? A few simple habits can go a long way toward keeping your accounts secure.
At Members First Credit Union of Florida, your financial security is one of our top priorities. Here are five easy steps you can take to better protect yourself online.
1. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
One of the most effective ways to protect your online accounts is by enabling multi-factor authentication. MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification, such as a text message code, authentication app, or biometric scan, in addition to your password.
Even if a password is compromised, MFA can help prevent unauthorized access to your account.
2. Use Strong, Unique PasswordsStrong passwords remain a critical line of defense against cyber threats. Avoid using easily guessed information such as birthdays, names, or common words. Instead, create passwords that are long and complex, using a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
It's also important to use a different password for each account. A password manager can help you securely generate and store unique passwords without having to remember them all.
3. Set Up Account Alerts and Use Card Management ToolsStaying informed about account activity can help you spot potential fraud early. Account alerts can notify you of important activity, such as login attempts, password changes, large transactions, or unusual purchases, giving you the opportunity to take quick action if something doesn't look right.

- Turn your debit or credit card on or off instantly
- Receive notifications when your card is used
- Report a card lost or stolen
- Check balances and monitor transactions

Misplaced your card? Instead of immediately worrying about fraud or ordering a replacement, you can temporarily turn your card off while you look for it. If you find it, simply turn it back on and continue using it as normal.
4. Practice Safe Online Shopping HabitsOnline shopping offers convenience, but it can also create opportunities for scammers. Before making a purchase, verify that the website is legitimate and secure. Look for "https://" in the web address and avoid entering payment information while connected to public Wi-Fi whenever possible.
Be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true and stick with trusted retailers and secure payment methods.
5. Keep Your Devices and Software UpdatedSoftware updates do more than add new features. They often include important security patches that protect against newly discovered vulnerabilities. Regularly update your operating system, mobile apps, web browsers, and antivirus software to help prevent cybercriminals from exploiting outdated technology.
Whenever possible, enable automatic updates so you stay protected without having to remember to manually install them.
Stay Cyber Smart. Cybersecurity doesn't have to be overwhelming. By enabling multi-factor authentication, creating strong passwords, monitoring account activity, using Card Management tools, shopping safely online, and keeping your devices updated, you can significantly reduce your risk of fraud and identity theft.
