Contactless Payments — What You Should Know About Tap to Pay5/7/2024

Person making contactless payment with credit card

Tap to pay or contactless payments allow you to pay for purchases with a simple tap or wave of your card. This allows for quick, easy, and secure payments to be made at point of sale (POS). Since we've recently introduced the Members First Credit Union of Florida contactless Visa® Rewards credit card, we're sharing what you need to know about making contactless payments, what makes them a more secure way to pay, and answering some frequently asked questions.

Making Contactless Payments

Save time every time you tap your Members First contactless Visa® Rewards credit card.

  • Look for the contactless symbol at checkout.
  • Tap or wave your card in front of the POS terminal.
  • Wait for a beep or green light before removing your card.
  • Follow any instructions on the screen (you might be asked to sign or enter your PIN)

Security

Contactless credit cards are currently among the safest forms of payment. Compared to magnetic strips that can be easily duplicated, contactless credit cards offer more security. When you make a contactless payment, your contactless card creates a unique, transaction-specific, one-time code that makes it incredibly effective in reducing counterfeit fraud. In addition, your contactless chip card must be placed within two inches of the contactless symbol on the checkout terminal for the transaction to go through.

Frequently Asked Questions About Your Members First Contactless Visa® Credit Card

Are contactless cards safe?

Yes. Contactless credit cards are one of the safest forms of payment. It's incredibly difficult for a thief or hacker to recreate the one-time code that is generated when you 'Tap to Pay'.

Where can I use my new contactless card?

You can use your new contactless card anywhere Visa® credit cards are accepted. If a business does not have a contactless enabled register, you can still swipe or insert your card to make purchases. Contactless technology is supported by thousands of merchants worldwide.

What is the difference between EMV Chip protection and my contactless card?

Your Members First Visa® credit card comes with both EMV Chip protection and contactless capability. When you make a payment by inserting your card into a chip-enabled register, a unique code is created that changes each time you use your card. Similiary, when you 'Tap to Pay' at a contactless enabled terminal, a unique one-time transaction specific code is generated. This makes both chip protection and contactless payments more secure than swiping. 'Tap to Pay' shines because it is secure and enables you to make payments at checkout quicker.

What can I do to prevent my contactless card from accidentally being charged?

Your contactless card must be placed within two inches of the contactless symbol located on the POS or checkout terminal for a transaction to take place and vendors will have to initiate the purchase. It is important, however, to make sure that only one contactless device is close to the reader. So, when you use your Members First Visa® contactless credit card, please separate it from other contactless cards.

Can I use my contactless card to make purchases online?

Yes. Your Members First Visa® contactless credit card still has number, expiration date, and security (CVV/CVC code). However, it's important to remember to always use caution when making online purchases. To help keep your account from being compromised, shop only from trustworthy sites or vendors and don't save your payment information on websites or your browser.

Do I still earn rewards when I make contactless payments?

Regardless of whether you swipe, insert, or 'Tap to Pay', when you make payments using your Members First Visa® credit card, you'll earn 1 rewards point for every $1 spent on purchases.
